Relationship between gum disease and hypertension

Studies in hypertensive patients with gum disease
In December 2018, the American Heart Association published a study of 3,600 people with high blood pressure.

This research found that patients with gum disease were less likely to respond to high blood pressure medications.

This reduces the chances of reaching optimal health with controlled pressure by 20%.

This study was based on adults over the age of 30 who were on a prescribed treatment to control their blood pressure. The results were the following:

47.8% of the patients were free of some periodontal disease

37.8% had moderate periodontal disease.

11.5% were diagnosed with severe periodontal disease.

With these results it was possible to determine that patients with gum disease have less chance of a successful treatment to control blood pressure.

Gum diseases and their effects in hypertensive patients
Gum disease is significantly associated with health risks for patients on antihypertensive treatment.

The risk is determined to be greater than 20%. These are the chances that the patient will have an unsuccessful treatment to improve his blood pressure.

This compared to patients who do not have gum disease.

All because gum disease is related to a problem in antihypertensive therapy, causing patients to have a poor response to prescription drugs.

Unlike hypertensive patients without any gum disease, their systolic blood pressure condition is considered more stable for their health.

Importance of gum care in hypertensive patients
Taking as reference the conclusion of the study, hypertensive patients who take care of their gums are less likely to suffer risks to their general health.

Therefore, good gum health would also mean a good systolic blood pressure profile.

What is essential for the quality of life of hypertensive patients.

It is for this reason that patients with high blood pressure should be informed about all the care measures for their gums; in order to prevent a disease from becoming a risk to your health.
