Smile and obesity: A relationship you should know about

Obesity is a disease that affects different parts of a person's life, such as health and mind. But, it can also increase the risk of heart problems and reduce quality of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in the body that has a detrimental impact on health.

According to statistics from the Government of Mexico, about 70% of the population is overweight, and about a third suffers from obesity. This situation is closely related not only to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but also to disorders in the bone and muscular system, as well as to certain types of cancer.

Unfortunately, unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity contribute to 32% of deaths in women and 20% in men in the country.

A diet high in fat, calories, processed foods, and sugars, along with a lack of physical activity, is a recipe for obesity. In addition to contributing to weight gain, these foods can trigger oral health problems, such as periodontal disease, early tooth loss, and bad breath. Poor diet can also result in a deficiency of essential nutrients, making it harder for the body to fight off oral infections.

Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy weight and a radiant smile:

  • Control portions and reduce caloric intake.
  • Decrease the amount of sugar in your diet.
  • Opt to drink water instead of sugary sodas.
  • Avoid unhealthy foods such as candy, cookies, cakes, jams, and chips.
  • Say no to junk food and fast foods.
  • Don't use food as an emotional reward.
  • Increase your daily physical activity.
  • Maintain a proper oral hygiene routine, brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing every night after brushing.
  • Don't neglect regular visits to the dentist to keep your oral health in tip-top condition.
