Periodontics

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, destroying them as well as the supporting bone that keeps the teeth in the mouth. The main cause of this disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth due to poor oral hygiene. This plaque later hardens and becomes known as tartar. The treatment consists of removing plaque and stones from the pockets around the teeth, polishing and smoothing the roots. This removes bacteria and irritants that cause inflammation.
