Dental independence is an important milestone in our children's development. As they grow up, it is essential to allow them to form their own oral hygiene habits, while still supervising the process to ensure they take proper care of their teeth and gums. In this article, we'll answer common questions about when and how to let your children take the lead in their dental hygiene.
How long to supervise brushing?
The answer varies depending on the child and their habits. Generally, around the age of 7 or 8, many children can handle a toothbrush on their own. If they show interest, allow them to practice, but make sure they don't neglect any points. Teach them to brush the top, bottom and sides of the teeth, as well as the tongue for fresh breath.
When to stop?
By age 9 or 10, most children can brush on their own, but continue to supervise and do a nightly check-up. Around age 12, they are usually able to take care of their oral hygiene independently, but be available to answer questions and provide support.
How do you know if they are doing it right?
Observe their oral hygiene regularly and see the dentist twice a year. In addition, provide adequate information, tools and care to help them maintain good dental habits. The balance between autonomy and guidance is key to ensuring optimal oral health throughout their lives.
