At Centauro Dental Clinics, we care about your smile and we want to help you avoid cavities.
What are cavities?
An infection that originates when bacteria present in the mouth produce acids that damage the enamel of the teeth, creating small holes called cavities. If left untreated, it can lead to pain, infection and even tooth loss.
Why do they appear?
Tooth decay occurs when you don't have a good oral hygiene routine. Also, eating a lot of foods with sugar and refined carbohydrates can cause cavities to appear and damage your mouth.
Types of cavities
There are different types of cavities. At first, they may affect only the outer layer of the tooth, called the enamel. If the decay progresses further, it can also damage a layer underneath called dentine, where there are small nerves that can cause sensitivity or pain. There are also cavities that go all the way to the centre of the tooth, where the nerve is.
How are they removed?
The dentist uses a special tool to remove the decay from your tooth. Before doing so, he or she uses an anaesthetic so that you do not feel any pain. If the damaged part doesn't reach the nerve, he or she will apply a medicine, then remove the decayed tooth tissue and restore the tooth by filling it with a special filling material called resin.
How to treat and prevent cavities
Prevent cavities with these simple tips:
- Brush your teeth three times a day, especially before bedtime.
- Floss your teeth
- Use mouthwash
- Don't forget to visit your dentist twice a year to check your teeth.
