How do I know if my child needs orthodontics?

When children reach 7 or 8 years of age, it is advisable to perform a first orthodontic evaluation. This evaluation can be carried out by an orthodontist or a pediatric dentist specializing in Dentofacial orthopedics.

Here are some signs that could indicate the need for orthodontic treatment:

  • Beginning of dental replacement: When the process of changing baby teeth for permanent teeth begins.
  • Crowded teeth (Crowding): If the teeth are crowded or poorly aligned.
  • Late loss of permanent teeth: When the permanent teeth do not fall at the expected time according to chronological age.
  • Problems chewing food: Difficulty chewing food properly.
  • Bad habits: Such as biting objects, pencils, pens, etc.
  • Lip or finger sucking: Persistence of this habit beyond a certain age.
  • Mouth breathing: When the child breathes predominantly through the mouth rather than through the nose.
  • Temporomandibular Joint Pain (TMJ): Pain when chewing or opening and closing the mouth.
  • Tongue habit: When the tongue pushes against the front teeth instead of being against the palate.

The results of orthodontics and orthopedics are more effective during childhood, as it is easier to correct bone defects and dental malpositions at this stage of development.
